A look at McGehee, Arkansas

McGehee is a town of approximately 4,000 located in southeastern Arkansas, just west of the Mississippi River. McGehee is primarily a farming community that has had its fair share of struggles in recent years with the challenges that have faced the American economy.

Desha County, where McGehee is located, is one of the poorest counties in Arkansas. It is estimated that more than 33% of McGehee residents are living at or below the poverty line, and unemployment is at about 13.5%.

There is great opportunity to serve in this community while also learning from the residents and members of the churches that we will be working alongside.

Ministry

We will be partnering with Kenny Shaw and First Presbyterian Church in McGehee serving in a variety of ways. There will be opportunities for construction projects, leading VBS, "winterizing" homes, as well as working with a local food pantry. Students may work with one team throughout the entire week, or be asked to "float" to where they are needed as the week goes on. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit! Our goal is to begin a partnership with this community and serve alongside them while learning to experience God in new ways.
