Serve In The Local Community

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Ephesians 2:10 TNIV

There is no such thing as a “non-serving Christian” – we were created to do good works.  We are called to serve God and to love our neighbors as ourselves.  Good works are not just for pastors, and deacons and elders and church employees.  We are all missionaries!  “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession… 1 Peter 2:9  God has given us abilities not for our own use, but for his use, and that we may use our blessings to bless others.  "Now you belong to him ... in order that you might be useful in the service of God." Romans 7:4

First Pres partners with many local agencies and ministries which need folks to share their gifts and talents in serving and helping others.  You can sign up for many here, or call the Associate for Local Missions, 884-6111, to learn about opportunities.

Family Promise

Looking to help out with families in homeless situations? We need volunteers for hosting opportunites, food donations, meal preparation and overnight hosting for the next First Pres host week, July 17-31, 2016.

We will have sign up tables in the Narthex on Sunday, July 10 or you can sign up online by clicking here.

For a better understanding of the families we host and to hear one family’s story from middle-class to homelessness and their experience with IHN in Tennessee, watch this news story:

Please contact the mission office, 884-6233 with questions regarding registrations and/or Family Promise.

Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children MobilePackTM events help produce 500,000 meals for God's starving children aroudn teh world! This is a GREAT way for a family to serve together: ages 5-8 years with a parent, over 8 years can pack independently.  You can sign up for one 2-hour shift or more! We ask each volunteer to consider donating $50 to cover the cost of the meals they pack.  Financial contributions of any amount are gratefully accepted.  We will be using the FMSC website.  Registering and donating are separate pages.  The event date for 2016 is October 28-29.

ESM - Ecumenical Social Ministries

ESM Food Collection

The First Sunday of every Month: ESM depends on First Pres for their large food collection the first Sunday of each month

These items are always appreciated:

  • Canned Meat
  • Plastic & Paper Grocery Bags

  • Toothbrushes

  • Razors

  • Bath Soap

  • Feminine Hygience Products

  • Diapers (Sizes: 4,5 & 6)

Another opportunity to serve is to help collect the food for ESM at one of our stations - Weber Street parking lot, Bijou Street (main) entrance, or the plaza entrance?  The time commitment is short and it is a great opportunity to meet and greet people as they drop off their donations.  Time shifts are 30 minutes prior to each service: 7:50 - 8:20; 9:15 - 9:45, or 10:20 - 11:10.

Young Lives

Tuesday evenings teen moms come to the Weber Street Center to learn about Jesus while having food and fellowship with mentoring moms and grandmas. You can bless these young ladies and their precious babies by providing a meal or helping mentor them during their Bible studies or times of fellowship.  For more information, contact Jessica Wells
